Registration for the 6th Annual Qlathe BBQ Championship is now underway, if you’re in town you won’t want to miss this two day event on March 15th and 16th 2024 at Lone Elm Park.
You should have no problems finding this city, because it is the US headquarters for GARMIN International, known for great GPS devices. Olathe is on the border of Missouri and Kansas, so it was fraught with the dynamics of the civil war.
Growth came with the traffic on the Oregon Trail, the California Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, all of which came near or through the town. Then the railroads dried up the trail traffic and from 1890 to 1950 the population hung out just under four thousand folks.
About the Event
Welcome the interstates in the fifties, and the town nearly doubled in size every 10 years for 4 decades. Just close enough to be a bedroom community for Kansas City, it appears that the animosity of the civil war had gone away completely. This is highly evident in the KCBS sanctioned event held every spring. With $10,000 in prize money, teams compete for their share in chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket.
When: March 15-16, 2024
Where: Lone Elm Park
20921 W. 167th Street
Olathe, KS
Masters Series points are also up for grabs at this event. 2023 saw 68 teams competing, nearly back to the pre-Covid competition levels. Bull Creek BBQ took the top honors, and the pitmaster’s had their work cut out for them. With the morning temps around 15 degrees, they were earning their keep maintain steady temps on their ‘cue.
For a lot of teams this is the rust-buster event, one of the first competitions of the season. Brushing out the cobwebs and brushing on the sauce; the Qlathe event makes a good first step for the long sojourn of competitive cooking in the Kansas City region, and in general.
