The Memphis in May series of events includes what is arguably the most prestigious barbecue cooking competition in the US, with the name “World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest” (WCBCC).
This is a serious competition with some fun events. You can join some private sessions with competitors and judge, taste, and interact with the teams. There are cooking classes held by these masters of the flame, and then there are food choices and beer gardens for all to enjoy. WCBCC is a grand daddy event that is esteemed in the ‘Q world and enjoyed by thousands. See below for coverage of this year's and past year's events.

The MiM Memphis in May: The World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest, 1978
TN River BBQ is and early fall event, 9/23-9/24 in 2022, taking place in Savannah, TN. Usually drawing a hundred or so teams, this is a qualifier event for The American Royal Barbeque Competition and the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Barbeque Competition and has over $10,000 in prize money up for grabs.
2021 includes a pork chop competition for the pros and their usual wing cook off. The judges will award The Governor’s Trophy, and this event offers an interactive people’s choice tasting for pulled pork with ballots to select the People’s Choice Award. In addition to the competition there is a variety of food choices to enjoy. 2021 may not have the music side often festival, but organizers look forward to having that part of the event when things get back to normal. The little town of Lynchburg, TN is already home to some big flavor in Jack Daniel’s whiskey. They up the flavor game with a true championship barbecue competition. The best of the best, each competing team has to have won a prior state championship event or event with 50 other teams competing. For over 30 years this has been a top notch barbecue event in October, in this case 10/8-9 2021.
The teams are well known and another 40,000 people are known to show up to enjoy this event. And it only takes a voluntary donation to the Moore Country School system to be a guest at the event. In addition to touring the distillery, there is a Bung and Bag Toss competition and the Country Dog Contest. There is also the delightful Lynchburg community of shops and restaurants for everyone to enjoy.
